Most SaaS link building still runs on a leftover ecommerce playbook: buy placements, chase Domain Rating, repeat. It’s a fast way to spend budget and a slow way to build anything that survives a Google update or a skeptical prospect clicking through to “see who else uses this.”
SaaS link building works differently because the buyer works differently. A software purchase isn’t an impulse click — it’s a multi-week evaluation involving several stakeholders, comparison research, and a fair amount of “let me see what other people who’ve used this actually say.” Links that show up in that research — a mention on a tool a prospect already trusts, a comparison post, a roundup written by someone in their exact role — do double duty: they help you rank, and they build the credibility that gets a trial signed up.
It’s tempting to sort every link opportunity by Domain Rating and go after the biggest number available. The problem is that Google, and more importantly your actual buyers, can tell the difference between a link that fits and a link that was bought. A mid-authority blog that’s genuinely read by product managers in your category will often move the needle more than a high-authority general news site that happens to have a marketing section.
Relevance shows up in two places: topical fit (does this publication actually cover your space) and audience fit (would your buyer plausibly read it). A backlink strategy that filters for both, even at the cost of raw domain metrics, tends to compound — each new placement reinforces the topical cluster you’re already building rather than sitting as an isolated, disconnected signal.
Contextual link insertions — getting cited inside an already-ranking, relevant article — tend to be efficient because you’re borrowing an existing page’s authority rather than waiting for a brand-new post to rank on its own.
Guest posts on niche publications still work when the publication has a real, engaged readership in your category, not when it’s a generic “write for us” page that will publish almost anything for a fee.
Digital PR tied to original data — a small internal study, a benchmark report, an interesting dataset from your own product usage — gives journalists and bloggers an actual reason to cite you, which tends to produce more natural-looking, durable links than direct outreach for a generic mention.
Resource page listings are a quieter but reliable source: many SaaS categories have curated “best tools for X” pages maintained by bloggers or other software companies, and a genuine fit there is low-effort, high-relevance link equity.
Link networks, PBNs, and bulk guest-post packages promising dozens of links a month are easy to spot once you’ve seen a few: the anchor text is too exact-match, the surrounding content is thin or unrelated, and the sites all seem to accept anyone. These can produce a short-term ranking bump and a long-term cleanup problem. If a tactic can’t survive someone on your prospect’s team actually clicking through to see where the link lives, it’s not worth the risk.
The agencies and in-house teams that keep making progress on link building treat it as an ongoing research function, not a quarterly sprint. That usually means:
None of this is complicated, but it is slower than buying a package of links. The tradeoff is that it’s the version of link building that still looks good a year later — to search engines and to the next prospect who clicks through to check who else you work with.
